BART Oakland Connector

Thompson Metal Fab is not a stranger to projects with tight tolerances, and this tram project might take the cake. TMF fabricated and painted roughly 3.5 miles of two-line track as part of an expansion project for the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) in Oakland, CA. Each section of the track was roughly 40-50′ in length and each section was uniquely different from any of the others/ This cable-style tram works by pulling passenger cars with tires along the top-flange of an I-beam.

To ensure the smoothest possible ride for passengers, a 2mm tolerance was required across any given 500′ long assembly. Thompson took advantage of a machine that would run along the top of the flange and measure the change in elevation, camber, and tilt. As noted previously, the tolerance for these items was only 2mm across the 500′ assemblies.
