South Pole Telescope: Guard Ring

Six years after Thompson Metal Fab supplied the South Pole Telescope’s 125-Ton support foundation (see above, under the telescope), TMF was contracted again for the supply of the aluminum guard ring that fits behind the dish of the telescope. The intent of the guard ring and panels is to help improve the signal received from the telescope.

Due to the remote field location of the project, it was critical that the guard ring fit to the pre-existing telescope without issue. The guard ring was fabricated and erected in our shop to tolerances much tighter that typical AISC allowance.
