FEATURED PROJECT: Miter Gate Fabrication
Thompson Metal Fab received the contract to shop fabricate a set of Miter Gates for the US Army Corp of Engineers at The Dalles Dam. Each leaf (two total) measures 52’ W x 106’ H and are approximately One-Million pounds. On the face of each leaf is a skin plate that transitions from ½” to 1” THK across a 55’ Radius. This project used a number alloys including carbon and three types of stainless steel which TMF handled with ease. After completion of fabrication and coatings, the leafs were rolled out of our facility and onto a barge for delivery. The new gate will replace the pre-existing gate and will include new pintle assemblies which were also fabricated by TMF.
Due to navigational lock closures on the Columbia River, an aggressive fabrication/delivery schedule was required to supply new Miter Gates for The Dalles Dam. With TMF, the Owner and Contractor were treated to a fabricator with ample space and a highly qualified crew. In addition, all coatings were applied on-site through our Paint Department. With use of heavy-duty transportation dollies and the barge slip at our facility, we were able to simply roll on the two Miter Gate leafs onto a barge for delivery.
