FEATURED PROJECT: Universal City Pedestrian Bridge

Awarded the 2016 Outstanding Bridge Project of the Year by the American Society of Civil Engineers (Los Angeles), the Universal City Pedestrian Bridge was built to offer safe access in the area adjacent to Metro Rail’s Red Line Station and Universal Studios. The steel bridge consists of an exposed V-section through-truss supported on four tubular steel columns. The abundance of TKY joints required a fabricator with skilled fitters and welders in efforts to maintain the required tolerances, and to ensure the quality of the weld being applied. Like most bridge projects, TMF was required to perform a progressive assembly of this bridge in order to verify fit. Due to the complex geometry and overall size of the bridge, in many cases TMF had to fit/weld the structure on elevated platforms in our shop. Our indoor space and multiple overhead bridge cranes allowed TMF to handle the unique fabrication process safely. The bridge shipped in (7) main sections, consisting of the trusses and chords. TMF also supplied the cross framing, elevator tower steel, support frames, pipe columns, and canopies. All structures were prime painted at our facility and finish coated in the field.

The 400’ bridge sits at the corners of Lankershim Boulevard and Universal Hollywood Drive, with the longest unsupported section nearing 150’ in length. This pedestrian access fits seamlessly in the surrounding area thanks to the visually light and roofless design coupled with the ‘transparent’ architecture. In total, nearly 360-Tons of fabricated product was produced for this design/build bridge project.
