Overview

Thompson Metal Fab was selected to fabricate Hilcorp’s HAK Rig #2, known as “Innovation”—a 1.5 million-pound Arctic drilling rig designed with low-temperature materials rated to –40°F. The project included fabrication of the mast and substructure, in addition to 21 individual modules across three core complexes: power, mud, and pipe. TMF fabricated the components using cold-weather steels, applied coatings in-house, and installed major equipment prior to rig-up. Thanks to the facility’s high bays and crane capabilities, modules were assembled vertically up to 50 feet tall—well beyond what most shops can accommodate indoors. Once assembled, modules were transported to TMF’s rig-up yard for test assembly, then disassembled and rolled onto a barge for delivery. This project demonstrated TMF’s ability to execute complex, climate-adapted drilling systems under one roof.
