Overview

As part of an expansion to the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system in Oakland, California, Thompson Metal Fab fabricated and painted approximately 3.5 miles of dual-line guideway track for a cable-style tram system. Each section of track ranged from 40 to 50 feet in length, with every piece uniquely shaped to meet the system’s complex geometry. To ensure a smooth passenger experience, the project required extremely tight tolerances—just 2 millimeters across 500-foot assembled runs. TMF employed specialized measurement tools to track elevation, camber, and tilt during fabrication. The precision and repeatability achieved across hundreds of unique sections reflect TMF’s advanced quality control processes and ability to meet the most demanding fabrication standards for transportation infrastructure.
