Cherry Point Refinery: Merox Reactor Vessels

Thompson Metal Fab worked with Anvil Corporation (Bellingham, WA) on the supply of (2) Merox Reactor Vertical Pressure Vessels. The vessels were 150” Diameter x 66’-4” L x 1-1/8” THK and made from SA516 Gr. 70 normalized plate. The weight of the vessels was approximately 150,000 lbs each.

Project Highlights

-Heat-treating took place at TMF. Individual burners were strategically placed in existing vessel nozzle openings and were fired with natural gas from the shop. Through this method each vessel became its own heat treat furnace.

-Each vessel was transported using Schnabel truss assemblies that were fabricated by TMF.

-Internal components, such as stainless steel “V” wire bed screens, were supplied installed and pre-fit by TMF.

-Also supplied were external attachments including four, large interconnecting platforms and associated ladders.
